Kathmandu, December 17: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Arju Rana Deuba has urged the world's research institutions to carry out further research on the situation of climate change in the mountainous region of Nepal, its sensitivity and risks.

"I urge the world's research institutions to conduct research in the mountainous regions and communities in Nepal on how Nepal has been affected in recent times due to the impact of climate change and what the risk is," she said in an interaction held at the Climate Research Institute in Potsdam, Germany on Sunday. Minister Deuba requested a meeting and interaction with Prof Dr Nils Hovius, head of the Geomorphology Department at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, GFZ, and Dr Ludwig Stroink, head of the project and international department.

Talking to the climate experts of the organization, she informed that Nepal is currently suffering from the effects of climate change and it is facing unimaginable losses in recent years due to it, adding that more research and cooperation is expected to solve this problem. During the interaction, discussions were held on geo-technical emergencies in Nepal and early warning systems related to flood and landslide control to reduce risk. Nepal and GFZ have been working on landslide early warning systems.

Minister Deuba said Nepal has been working in coordination with the international community on the issue of climate change as per its commitments and has been actively and high-level participation in all UN climate conferences and meetings.
