Not only close observers of events happening in Nepal, but also the major powers of the world, led by the United States and its allies in Europe, and specially our two close neighbours China and India, all are very interested in what should be done in vulnerable Nepal and what will happen there through their agents and organizations working here.
Even in the simple question of obtaining 'support' from China through its BRI project, much hype is being created. The different political parties are taking differing stances.
The saddest part is that not only political leaders but also the so-called intellectual leaders and even media persons are saying things as told by outsiders, not knowing what harm such remarks could have in the interest of the nation.
For example, one TV channel reported how the American project called MCC was more transparent and beneficial to Nepal but there are questions about the long-term impacts of BRI. Hardly any mention was made of how more than one hundred and thirty countries have benefited from the Chinese initiation of BRI. This was a totally biased report which individuals like me feel is total disinformation. As a person who has been involved in the media sector for so long, I have closely observed how the media people are also influenced by political leaders, INGOs and foreign powers.
We will come back to our own internal problems later now to talk of the international interference in smaller and weaker countries, we just can’t help but say something about the open manner in which America has tried to make its presence felt in different countries of the world, specially in the Arab nations.
All these steps have not been taken for the benefit of the people who are living in those countries, it is done for pure political and economic interests.
This is the biggest irony of the people who always preach to us about democracy, human rights, gender equality and all such messages of reforms. How many human rights have the Americans shown to the different coloured people and the women in their own country? Just for women to get voting rights in this so-called oldest democracy took more than two hundred years. For the others who the 'white skins' considered inferior, it took even longer. In fact, the Chinese immigrants played a major role in the construction of the railway system in the United States.
Still, we can't blame the Americans or some of its allies, but the blame is also on our own leaders and so-called activists in believing fully what they are told in seminars, conferences or workshops, purely meant to influence such types of people. In return, they may get some monetary benefits or free trips abroad, but they try to influence naïve people in their own country.
While talking of the intervention of many so-called 'democratic' nations, specially in Asia, Africa and South America, we simply cannot forget the utter failure of the Americans in the Sino-Pacific region, specially in Vietnam and in the Korean Peninsula.
At this moment, it would not be too much out of place to mention the remarks of one American ambassador named Moriarty or something, who cautioned some journalists at his home over dinner, by saying the then King may have to flee in a helicopter by hanging onto its tails. That was what happened to the Americans when they had to escape from the then South Vietnam by cramping themselves in choppers like we see our own citizens being jam-packed in small micro-buses. Our former King neither had to flee from the country nor had to seek asylum in another nation. This is something which the Americans and others fail to understand about Nepal's nationalism and their loyalty towards their country.
These types of Americans probably are feeling a sense of accomplishment by forcing Assad, the president of Syria to flee from his country, but there will be a serious flashback from the Arab nations too from this development.
Starting from Iraq, the Westerners led by the Americans destroyed Tunisia, Egypt and Libya among others, but the anger of the Muslim world will cost them dear sometime in the future. They should not forget the Twin Towers destruction and the sufferings of the Americans themselves.
Right now all we can do is just protest against such imperialism, still we must be realistic enough to admit that our voices will not be heard and instead the local agents of foreign nations and INGOs will try to stifle such independent opinion. As a long-time journalist, I have seen this happening many times and I also know that many individuals have been enticed or influenced by money or some other things by foreigners.
We still cannot only blame the foreigners. Our own leaders, bureaucrats, media persons rights workers and the so-called civil society leaders, among others, are also to be blamed for so easily falling into this trap of foreign interference just for their greed for money, power and some paid visits abroad. This is one of the saddest parts of our society and also the tragedy the nation is facing now. We must get out of this trap and the people have to be more alert to not believe what these anti-nationalists are saying.
For example, I once thought that the Maoists were real nationalists. Non less than Baburam Bhattarai had said we have to stop the playing of Indian songs in Nepal. What a patriotic decision we had thought. Maybe the innocent fighters had this belief too. Later I came to know that the leaders of this same party were being not only sheltered but also being helped by the same nation which they said they despised. If this is not hypocrisy, what is?
Now some Nepali leaders are also shouting about the misdeeds of the government and many are even threatening to come out on the streets to fight for the people.
What people are they talking about? They will be the most likely to suffer from such strikes and protests as we have so regularly seen in the past and also in recent days as well.
Care for the people are least in the minds of any party, all they want is to get to power through any means. Here, we must not also forget the volatile mood of those supporters of different groups, who seem to side with any one party or the other just by their false beliefs or whims. If they really want to see change and development, they must boycott the elections which brings these same people to power all the time. They must look for a real leader who will make the country strong and free of corruption. We can look at Balen Shah, a young man who may not be that mature in his attitude but is clean and steadfast in his vision to make Kathmandu a clean and beautiful city with no corruption involved. We must start to choose these types of leaders instead of backing traditional leaders seeking only to get to power and earn money.
