Kathmandu, August 24: The Sugarcane Producers Federation, Sugarcane Producers Farmers Committee and others have protested at Maitighar demanding that the sugarcane subsidy for the last fiscal year be paid at the rate of 70 per quintal per subsidy amount.

Participants in the demonstration displayed placards saying, "We will not accept unilateral prices," "Stop exploiting sugarcane farmers," "Pay sugarcane subsidies," and "Involve farmers in price determination."
Speaking at the protest, Uttam Singh Rana, former president of the Sugarcane Producers Association of Mahottari District, said that he used to receive sugarcane subsidy of Rs 70 every year, but now the government has cut it. He demanded that the government immediately pay the subsidy amount announced by the government.
"We were getting the subsidy of Rs 70 every year. But this year the government has cut it. We are thus compelled to stage street protest."
