Kathmandu, Nov 29: Nepal Police is preparing to recruit more than 132,000 temporary police for the March 5 House of Representatives election, surpassing the previous intake by at least 15,000. These personnel handle the innermost security layer at polling sites, and the final number will rise once polling centers are confirmed.
More than 835,000 new voters have joined the rolls. The Election Commission usually creates one new polling center for every 1,000 new voters in a constituency, so officials expect a noticeable jump in total stations. DIG Abi Narayan Kafle said the government will make the final call on new polling sites, after which Nepal Police will open the temporary police vacancies. Criteria for selection have already been sent to provincial and district offices.
Temporary police will receive the same basic pay, uniforms and travel allowances given to regular police during their deployment.
A three stage security plan is ready. Nepal Police will take charge of the first cordon, the Armed Police Force will form the second, and the Nepal Army the third. Temporary police will support regular units across all phases. The President has already endorsed Army mobilization on the government’s recommendation.
Voter registration closed on November 21 with 344,914 new biometric registrations and 492,180 added through the national ID system. Including those who turned 18 by November 1, Nepal now has 18,168,023 eligible voters. The Home Ministry is working to finalize polling locations, and officials say the surge in new voters means the number of stations must rise.
