Prime Minister and UML chairman KP Sharma Oli inaugurated Damak Business Complex in his election constituency in Jhapa amidst the tight security as the supporters of Durga Prasain and the activists of Rastriya Swatantra Party displayed black flags to him in Damak and elsewhere.
Oli laid the foundation stone of the Damak Tower on July 12, 2019, during his previous stint as the Prime Minister. When the construction of the tower was completed spending Rs. 1.45 billion, he inaugurated it as Damak Business Complex on Sunday as the idea of building the tower was severe criticism.
The 18-storey tower is 100 metres tall. The concrete structure reaches a height of 72 metres, while a 28-metre metal-frame tower sits atop it, making it taller than the Dharahara.
The initial contract amount for the project was Rs. 1.3818 billion, but upon completion, the total cost increased by 5.4 per cent, reaching Rs. 1.45 billion. Ashish Om Sairam Construction Company and the Chinese company ZCGIIC were jointly awarded the construction contract for the tower.
Still many think the tower was a waste of money. Even after the inauguration, it is empty. A few months ago, Durga Prasain, the critic of Oli reached the tower and said that it was good for keeping prisoners jailed for involving in corruption activities.
Inaugurating it Prime Minister Oli stated that the ‘Damak Business Complex’ in Jhapa marks a new dimension of development for Nepal. He urged people not to misunderstand it as a view tower and it was the tallest commercial complex in Nepal.
The complex stands at Dapgachi of Damak Municipality-3 in his hometown, Jhapa.
