Kathmandu, Jan 23: The candidacy of Reshamlal Chaudhary, patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, has been scrapped.

He had filed his candidacy to contest the March 5 general elections from Kailali district’s constituency 1.

The Office of the Election Officer invalidated his nomination. In its decision, the office stated: “Since the nomination paper of Mr Resham Lal Chaudhary, candidate of the Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal (single election symbol), for the election of a Member of the House of Representatives under the first past the post electoral system cannot be maintained in accordance with the prevailing law, it has been scrapped as per law.”

Chaudhary had previously served a life sentence for his involvement in the Tikapur incident, in which several people had died, including a senior superintendent of police and a child, during the Tharu protest.

He was given amnesty by the then-President Bidya Devi Bhandari, paving the way for his release following a political understanding after he won his election despite being in jail
