Kathmandu, 19 May: A total of eight Mt Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) climbers have been reported dead in the Spring season 2023. Xuebin Chen, a Chinese national, died near the South Summit, whereas, Suzanne Leopoldina Jesus, an Indian national, died in Lukla during treatment on 18 May. American national Jonathon Sugarman died at Camp 2 on 1 May and Phurba Sherpa, a member of Nepal Army’s clean-up campaign died near Camp 4 on 16 May. Victor Brinza, a Moldovan national, died at the South Col on 17 May. All deaths are related to high altitude sickness, according to reports. A total of 466 climbers from 43 groups have obtained permits from the Department of Tourism to climb Mt Sagarmatha in Spring 2023.
