Kathmandu, August 17: Glacier lakes burst in the Khumbu region causing devastating floods in the Thime river on August 16. The floods caused a heavy loss of property and human life in the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, Solukhumbu district.
Bhokraj Karki, Ward Chairman of Thulung Dudh Koshi Rural Municipality-7, informed that two of the five glacier lakes at Tashi Lapcha burst on Friday.
A team from the National Disaster Reduction and Management Authority, along with Defense Minister Manbir Rai, visited the affected area and confirmed the reason behind the massive floods.
The flood caused massive destruction, sweeping 20 houses and hotels, three schools, a hostel, and a clinic. Two locals have been disappeared due to the sudden flood.
The melting of glaciers in lakes around the Himalayan region due to climate change has become a serious threat to the lower settlements.
