There is a saying in Nepali, “Sanolai Ain, Thulolai Chain” (laws for small people and impunity for big people). This we have been experiencing in “New” Nepal. Nepali Congress Vice Chairman Dhanraj Gurung is alleged to be involved in cooperative fraud. When one officer in the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) under the Nepal Police attempted to investigate the cooperative fraud, he was transferred instantly. Earlier too, some officers were suddenly transferred from the CIB when they started further investigation on the Bhutanese Refugee scam. The reason was that the investigation team found the involvement of big and influential leaders in sending Nepalis to the USA covered in Bhutanese refugees. The Court rejected an attempt to register a case against Lilaballav Adhikari, ex-minister in the Koshi Province, who was involved in human trafficking to Japan. Those who had flown to Japan carrying fake documents and paying a hefty amount to the gang sending them to Japan along with Adhikari are under custody the Police have filed a case against them but the Attorny’s Office found no evidence about Adhikari’s involvement in trafficking the Nepalis to Japan. The Balmandir scam is impending now. There are many cases which are kept pending by the investigation team as those involved in such scams were powerful and influential.
In the recent past, the senior leader of the Nepali Congress, Sekhar Koirala said that the present NC-UML alliance government will not collapse. If the government collapses, half of the MPs representing the Nepali Congress will be in jail. Understandably, he was indicating that those MPs are involved in different types of crimes. The present coalition government got birth with the plan of giving protection to those leaders who are involved in crime. Democracy and crime are diverse sectors. In Nepal, politics has been criminalized and crime has been politicized. Punishment is for those who have no reach to the power and laws are not for those who are playing with the power. We believe a crime has flourished in this loot-tantra, what those revolutionaries say is “Loktantra”.
