After inking the agreement to form a new government on July 1, Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML leaders argued that they forged alliance to maintain political stability and good governance by making amendment to the constitution. Now they have formed the government under CPN-UML chairman KP Sharma Oli with a few controversial faces. As such, the people in general have not expected good governance from the present government.
While Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli himself has been accused of involving in the Giri Bandhu Tea Estate land scam of Jhapa. Likewise, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel had purchased the land of Lalita Niwas, which he reportedly returned after an investigation found involvement of his son in purchasing the land.
Similarly, Arzu Rana, who is now Foreign Minister is rumoured to have her hands in the fake Bhutanese refugee camp. It is said that the ground for the present NC-UML coalition was prepared after the arrest of Bechan Jha, who had involved in the fake Bhutanese refugee case. After suspecting that he was sure to point his finger at Arzu in the case, the present coalition born because both Oli and Arzu wanted to remain safe from the corruption charges. Likewise, Water Resource Minister Deepak Khadka was dragged into the controversy relating to the misuse of Nepal Scout’s land. As such, good governance could not be possible although many ministers of the government look clean as they are new face in the cabinet.
It is noteworthy to recall the statements which the Maoist Centre chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal made while seeking vote of confidence in the House. He said he government was pulled down as he tried to maintain good governance.
Similarly, outgoing Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane said that the government was pulled down when he was preparing to open files of corruption cases of 25 individuals. Lamichhane also said that the arrest of Bechan Jha led to the collapse of the government.
Dahal’s argument that the two big parties came together in the initiative of billionaire Binod Chaudhary, who is accused of capturing the land of Bansbari Leather Shoes, also hinted that the new government would give protection to corrupt.
Considering the revelation of corruption cases and arrest of Jha just a few days before the NC-UML inked agreement, no one can undermine the statements of Dahal and Lamichhane. And it may not be a big surprise if Jha is released without conducting investigation and jailed UML secretary Top Bahadur Rayamajhi is freed.
