Kathmandu, Aug 4: The United States has been tightening pressure on countries purchasing crude oil from Russia and Iran. However, China has outright rejected the U.S. request.
Trade talks between China and the U.S. are currently underway, and both sides are expected to reach an agreement soon. Yet, China has taken a firm stance on its continued oil purchases from Russia and Iran.
In a post shared on social media platform X, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “China will always ensure its energy security based on its national interest.”
The U.S. has issued a threat to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese oil imports sourced from Russia and Iran.
Responding to this, the Chinese foreign ministry remarked, “Pressure and coercion achieve nothing. China will firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security, and development interests.”
China’s response came just as officials from both countries gathered in Stockholm to finalize a trade deal.
Mocking China’s strong posture, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant commented, “When it comes to buying oil from Russia, China takes its sovereignty very seriously.”
