Kathmandu, Jan 31: Birgunj Customs has logged a sharp rise in vehicle imports, with shipments worth Rs 18.15 billion entering through the border point in the first six months of the current fiscal year 2025/26. The amount is almost Rs 6 billion higher compared to the same period a year ago.
Officials say the surge in imports of vehicles and spare parts pushed customs revenue up as well. The office collected Rs 13.98 billion in duties from these items during the review period, up from Rs 10.21 billion last year.
Import data shows 434 jeeps, cars, and vans valued at Rs 930 million cleared customs during the period. Unassembled motorcycles dominated the list, with 32,331 units worth Rs 4.56 billion. The office also processed 380 trucks and mini trucks valued at Rs 1.06 billion, along with 10,797 tractors and trailers worth Rs 1.23 billion.
Electric vehicles also made a noticeable entry. Imports of electric jeeps, cars, and vans reached 456 units, with a total value of Rs 1.36 billion.
So yes, engines are humming at Birgunj, and the revenue counter is clearly enjoying the noise.
