Kathmandu, March 31: The government has imposed a ban on all betting apps and websites, warning that anyone found using them could face jail time.
Acting in line with the Cabinet’s 100-point governance reform agenda, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology enforced a decision requiring such platforms to be shut down within 24 hours.
Following a ministerial-level decision, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority coordinated with internet service providers to block all identified betting apps and websites.
According to ministry spokesperson Uday Bahadur Ranamagar, engaging in betting, facilitating it, or promoting it through advertisements is illegal under the Muluki Criminal Code 2074 and the Advertisement Regulation Act.
As per existing legal provisions, individuals involved in betting can face confiscation of the amount involved, up to one year in prison, and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.
The ministry has also warned the public not to use unauthorized betting platforms. It urged citizens to report any such activities to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, including contacting Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane if they come across such operations.
