Kathmandu, Jan 31: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has issued a clarification regarding a controversial remark by its Banke-3 candidate, Khagendra Sunar, and has formally cautioned him.

The party said it has drawn Sunar’s attention to the need for greater restraint, maturity, and respect for public norms in his statements and conduct in the days ahead.

Sunar came under criticism on social media after an interview in which he was quoted as saying that meat from cows or oxen should also be allowed to be eaten, similar to other animals and birds. Following the backlash, the party asked him to be careful.

On Friday, the party also made its clarification and position on the matter public. In a statement signed by General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti, the party apologised for the confusion and hurt religious and cultural sentiments caused by the remarks Sunar had made before joining the party.

The statement said Sunar has already clarified publicly that he is a vegetarian, does not support the killing of any animals or birds, and holds clear respect for the cow as the national animal. It added that although some of his comments were taken out of context and circulated on social media, he has apologised for the misunderstanding and the hurt caused, and has also expressed self-reflection.

The party said it has cautioned Sunar on the issue and reminded him to show greater restraint, maturity, and public decency in both his words and actions in the future.

“The party is confident that his intention was not to insult any religion, culture, or national symbol,” the statement said.

It also noted that the party’s statute and preamble uphold coexistence and mutual respect rooted in Nepal’s history, Sanatan civilization, and religious and cultural diversity.
