Kathmandu, Jan 30: The Nepali Embassy in the United States has urged Nepali nationals living there to strictly follow US laws and avoid any misuse of government welfare programs.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the embassy appealed to Nepalis residing in the US for study, travel, work, business, or family visits to stay within legal boundaries. It warned foreign nationals against seeking benefits meant only for US citizens by providing false or misleading information.
The embassy said it has been informed by US authorities that dependence on government-supported services such as subsidised health care, housing assistance, family support, or education aid can directly affect a person’s visa or green card status. Such involvement may even lead to the cancellation of legal status.
The notice also recalled that in 2024, Nepali citizens ranked high among foreign nationals found using US welfare services. Following this, the United States issued a public notice and temporarily halted immigrant visas for Nepali applicants.
Reiterating its appeal, the embassy asked Nepali nationals in the US not to rely on any citizen-only benefits through illegal means or false claims. It also urged holders of business and tourist visas, B1 and B2, not to misuse their visa status.
The embassy noted that US authorities have tightened visa rules in recent times, making compliance with the law more important than ever.
