Bangkok, Jan 31: Four Nepalis who were duped into working in online scamming centres have been rescued from Myawaddy, Myanmar, and brought back to Nepal.
The Nepali Embassy in Bangkok rescued them and repatriated them on Friday. “Four Nepali nationals involved in online scamming centres operating in Myanmar were rescued from the Myawaddy area with the support of the Thai government, brought to Bangkok via the Tak Immigration Office in Mae Sot, and sent back to Nepal today, January 30, 2026, on a Nepal Airlines flight,” the embassy said in a statement.
Among the four returnees, one is from Mahottari, one from Nuwakot, and two from Dang. All four have completed undergraduate-level education, according to the embassy.
One of the rescued individuals had completed a bachelor’s degree in Thailand and was working as a hotel receptionist. He told embassy officials that he went to Myanmar after being lured by the prospect of higher earnings.
Another individual from Dang had previously worked as a computer operator at a government office in the same district for several years.
The embassy said all of them were taken from Nepal with promises of data entry jobs in Thailand, but were forcibly transported to Myanmar upon arrival in Thailand.
“This incident shows that even highly educated Nepali citizens are falling or being trapped by the lure of high income through social media, friends, relatives, and attractive advertisements,” the statement said.
The embassy also noted that the involvement of Nepali nationals in such illegal online scamming activities is rising in Cambodia as well.
“Every day, Nepali victims or their family members contact the embassy requesting rescue. The embassy has been providing necessary consular services for their rescue. In the process of returning home, many have had to pay large fines under Cambodian immigration laws and, in some cases, serve long jail terms,” the embassy said.
The embassy warned that there is a high risk of being trafficked to scamming centres operating in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos’ Golden Triangle region under the pretext of travelling to Thailand, and urged people not to be tempted by offers of lucrative earnings.
