Kathmandu, Feb 3: The Election Commission has struck off 76 names from the proportional representation (PR) closed list after finding problems linked to age, voter registration, legal status, and rule compliance.
The Commission said four individuals failed the age requirement, while one person was not registered as a voter. To qualify for the House of Representatives, a candidate must be at least 25. Officials also removed 21 names of people placed on blacklists and excluded 12 others who had not cleared fines imposed in earlier elections. One candidate was dropped after a party nominated a man for a seat set aside for a woman.
Yagya Prasad Bhattarai, assistant election officer overseeing the PR system, said another 26 candidates were removed because their names appeared more than once. These individuals were listed both in the federal PR list and in provincial PR lists, which is not allowed.
Bhattarai explained that several candidates had faced penalties during the 2022 election for failing to submit election spending details. Since they did not pay the fines and later filed new nominations, the Commission removed them from the current PR list.
The Election Commission published the initial PR candidate list for the House of Representatives election on January 18. That list included 3,213 candidates submitted by political parties.
Parties have competed for 110 seats allocated under the proportional representation system. The remaining 165 seats in the House of Representatives will be filled through the first past the post method.
In a related update, the Commission said it has finished printing ballot papers for the PR election. A total of 20,854,800 ballot papers have been prepared for use in the March 5 polls.
