Kathmandu, Feb 2: President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Chandra Prasad Dhakal, has said that economic issues have never been given priority in the manifestos of political parties.

Speaking at a discussion titled “Economic Agenda in Party Manifestos,” organised by the Nepal Economic Journalists Association in Kathmandu on Sunday, Dhakal made the remarks.

He said political parties should focus on establishing their own economic agendas instead of trying to gain ground by criticising rival parties. According to him, the habit of leaders attacking other parties rather than presenting clear economic plans has become common.

“Leaders of political parties tend to portray other parties negatively. No one seems focused on putting forward their own agendas,” Dhakal said.

Dhakal also said political parties often hold a negative view of the private sector, which has caused problems at different times. He noted that political leadership and parties have failed to acknowledge the contribution of the private sector to the state.

“Why is there no discussion about job creation or the taxes paid by the private sector?” he asked. “There is no coordination among ministries. Decisions are made in search of popularity. Even if the state suffers losses, decisions are taken just to gain attention.”

Dhakal said the economy cannot remain active if the state does not promote and protect the private sector.
