Mr. Mahesh Lal Pradhan, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), pointed out the complex export regulations governing trade with India, while customs duties on imports from India were often relaxed and, at times, not even levied.
He mentioned that under a market-oriented system, it was possible for individual businesses to fix their own prices. He also said that unless significant reforms were made in banking, electricity supply, and excise and customs duties were simplified and made competitive, business and commerce would not prosper as envisaged.
Prime Minister G. P. Koirala, inaugurating the 26th General Assembly of the FNCCI, conceded that the new industrial and commerce policies still had some hurdles, which would soon be removed. He also urged the business community to come up with projects to harness rivers, with or without foreign collaboration, to accelerate the development of infrastructure.
