Kathmandu, Jan 27. The Election Commission has sought written explanations from five candidates contesting the upcoming House of Representatives election, citing alleged breaches of the election code of conduct.
The Commission asked for clarification from Jhapa 5 candidate Balen Shah after a complaint was filed over a comment he posted on the Facebook page of CPN UML chair KP Sharma Oli. Both Shah and Oli are competing in the same constituency.
The Commission also issued notices to Kamal Bhusal, also known as Nicholas Bhusal, contesting from Rupandehi 2 on behalf of the Nepal Janasewa Party, and Harka Raj Rai, widely known as Harka Sampang, chair of the Labour Culture Party and a candidate from Sunsari 1.
In Bhaktapur 2, the Commission sought clarification from Januka Pathak, also known as Shobha Pathak, of the Nepal Janasewa Party, and from CPN UML secretary Mahesh Basnet, who is also contesting from the same constituency.
According to the Commission, Bhusal is under scrutiny for promoting shoes linked to the Gen Z movement as an election symbol. Rai was asked to explain the alleged use of children in campaign activities, including making them wear campaign T shirts.
Pathak faces questions over statements deemed hateful and accusatory against rival candidates. Basnet was asked to clarify remarks considered offensive about Jhapa 5 candidate and senior Rastriya Swatantra Party leader Balen Shah.
