Kathmandu, Jan 25: Nepal Police’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has arrested operators of several travel companies for their alleged involvement in fake rescue operations. CIB Chief and AIG Manoj KC said those engaged in bogus transactions linked to fake rescues and tourist fraud have been taken into custody.

According to the CIB, arrests were made on Friday after obtaining court permission. Those arrested are Jayaram Rimal, Bibek Pandey, Rabindra Adhikari, Bibekraj Thapaliya, Mukti Pandey, and Subash KC. Investigations are underway on charges related to crimes against national interest, illicit financial gain, organized crime, and money laundering.

Jayaram Rimal and Bibek Pandey are associated with Mountain Rescue Service Pvt Ltd. Rabindra Adhikari and Bibekraj Thapaliya are linked to Nepal Charter Service Pvt Ltd, while Mukti Pandey and Subash KC are from Everest Experience and Assistance Pvt Ltd.

The CIB said investigations show that Mountain Rescue Service Pvt Ltd carried out fake rescues for 171 people out of 1,248 cases. The company is accused of making insurance claims exceeding USD 10 million.

Similarly, Nepal Charter Service Pvt Ltd conducted 471 rescues, of which 75 were found to be fake. Investigators say the company claimed USD 8.2 million in insurance payments.

Everest Experience and Assistance Pvt Ltd reportedly carried out suspicious rescues of 71 tourists out of 601 cases. The company is accused of claiming USD 1.153 million in connection with these rescues.
