Kathmandu, Jan 17: Following the Election Commission’s decision to grant official recognition to Gagankumar Thapa as president of the Nepali Congress, CPN UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has alleged foreign interference.

On Friday evening, Basnet said through social media that foreign interference had taken place within the Election Commission itself.

“Granting official status of the Nepali Congress to the splinter group led by Gagan Thapa by the Election Commission is an open attack on democracy and the rule of law,” he wrote. “Seeing an open display of foreign interference within a constitutional body like the Election Commission is deeply ironic and a matter of serious concern.”

On Friday, the Commission recognized Gagan Thapa, who was elected president through a special general convention, along with his team, as the official leadership.
