Janakpur Dham, Seven political parties in Madhes Province have reached an agreement on the new Chief Minister after a round of discussions. Province Chief Surendra Labh Karna had given until 5 pm Friday to form a new government, and the meeting of the seven parties held at the Provincial Assembly Secretariat on Thursday settled the leadership issue.

According to Saroj Kumar Yadav, parliamentary party leader of the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, the parties have already agreed on a name through consensus and will announce it formally on Friday. He said all seven parties are preparing to jointly stake their claim to form the government before the Province Chief at 2 pm on Friday.

Yadav said there is no dispute among the seven parties and the new leadership has been selected through consensus.

The seven parties include the Nepali Congress, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, Janamat Party, Maoist Centre, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Nepal, CPN Unified Socialist, and Nagarik Unmukti Party.

The contenders for Chief Minister are former Chief Minister and LSP provincial assembly member Jitendra Prasad Sonar (Sonal) and Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Yadav.

Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav, who had been appointed under Article 168, Clause 3 of the Constitution of Nepal, resigned after concluding that he lacked the numbers to secure a vote of confidence in the Provincial Assembly, as required by the Supreme Court’s order. After his resignation, Province Chief Karna, following the Supreme Court’s directive, called for the formation of a new government under Article 168, Clause 2 of the Constitution by 5 pm Friday.
