Kathmandu, Dec 4: Nepal is marking two festivals today, Yomari Punhi and Udhauli.

Yomari Punhi, rooted in Newar traditions in the Kathmandu Valley, goes back centuries. Families prepare yomari, a rice flour sweet filled with molasses, which is the highlight of the day. The occasion also coincides with Jyapu Day.

At the same time, Kirant communities are marking Udhauli. The Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar, and Yakhya groups come together to honour nature and offer prayers for a bountiful harvest.

The federal government has declared a public holiday for these festivals.
