Kathmandu, October 19: Former Prime Minister Oli says elections impossible without dialogue among political parties.

Oli, also UML Chairperson, claimed that an election environment cannot be created without dialogue among political parties. He asserted that due to the current government’s unwillingness to hold talks with political parties and the growing security challenges, the upcoming elections scheduled for March 5 (Falgun 21) would not be possible.

Oli reached the party’s central office for the first time since the Gen-Z movement that took place on September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23–24) to attend a tea reception hosted by the party. The Gen-Z movement toppled him from the PM’s position, with accusations that he fled by army helicopter. The protest also resulted in damage to the UML central office, which was set on fire during the unrest.

Addressing the tea reception at Chyasal, Lalitpur, on Saturday, Oli said that 1,200 police weapons and over 100,000 bullets were still missing and that around 5,500 prisoners were still at large, making it difficult to hold elections under such conditions.

“The demands raised by the Gen-Z youths against corruption and for good governance are justified, but we cannot support the anarchic activities carried out by violent elements in the name of those demands,” Oli said.

“A government should not operate or hold elections by creating an atmosphere of fear. We are in a democratic system. The state must ensure our security and freedom — citizens should not be forced to defend themselves.”

He further said that his party is not a weak force but one that has fought for democracy, adding, “We will work to restore democracy, peace, and order, and the UML will remain active in this mission.”

Oli reiterated that the reinstatement of the dissolved House of Representatives remains his party’s firm stance, and he urged party members to move ahead with clarity and confidence according to the party’s policy direction.

Oli warned the government against its intention to restrict his movement, saying that he can go anywhere across the country, enjoying the individual rights granted by the constitution.
