Kathmandu, October 14: After the Gen-Z movement, the Nepali Congress Central Committee is meeting for the first time today. The main agenda of the meeting is to decide whether to hold a regular or a special general convention — an issue that has become the key focus within the party. The decision on which type of convention to hold will be made only after collecting the opinions of all central members during the meeting at the party’s central office.
The party establishment and the dissident faction have not yet reached an agreement on whether to hold the convention within the month of Mangsir (mid-November to mid-December). As consensus could not be reached in the ongoing meeting of office bearers and former office bearers — which has been continuing for the past four days — another meeting has been called for Tuesday at 11 a.m. According to the party’s Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel, the agenda will first be finalized in the morning session, and then the Central Committee meeting will begin at 1 p.m.
Leaders from the opposing faction, including Gururaj Ghimire, along with 109 others, had started collecting signatures on Ashoj 6 (September 22) demanding a special general convention. The group seeking the special convention is preparing to register the collected signatures at the central office before today’s Central Committee meeting. Central member and one of the campaigners, Madhu Acharya, said that although the group had planned to submit the signatures to Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka on Monday, the plan was halted after the meeting of the Central Executive Committee was postponed.
