
Kathmandu, Sept 23: Out of the prisoners who escaped during the Gen Z protests, 6,984 have been brought back so far. According to the Department of Prison Management, 7,572 are still on the run.
Department Director Chomendra Neupane said 656 prisoners were returned in the past two days alone, and many are coming back daily.
The mass escape happened after jails were vandalized and set on fire during the Gen Z protest on Bhadra 24. A total of 14,556 prisoners had escaped, while 15,525 stayed put.
The search for the fugitives continues. The escapes took place from 28 prisons and 9 correctional facilities.
Some were arrested by police, but most returned voluntarily. Of those, 963 had fled from juvenile reform centers.
Police also confirmed that 2,000 suspects in custody escaped and are still being tracked. Ten prisoners have died.
