Kathmandu, Sept 23: In the past two months, 51 Nepali workers have died in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to the Nepali embassy in the UAE, 32 and 19 Nepalis lost their lives in the months of Shrawan and Bhadra respectively, during the current fiscal year 2082/83, while working abroad.
Previously, in the first two months of the fiscal year 2081/82, 62 Nepalis died in the UAE. That year, a total of 312 Nepalis lost their lives in the UAE, averaging 26 deaths per month. In the fiscal year 2080/81, 231 Nepali workers died in the UAE.
According to the Nepali embassy, most of these deaths were caused by road accidents, workplace accidents, heart attacks, and heart-related illnesses. There is a clear need to focus on the health and safety of Nepali workers in the UAE to reduce such fatalities.
These figures highlight the physical and mental health challenges faced by Nepali workers. Work pressure, environmental conditions, lack of proper health check-ups, and sudden accidents all increase risks. In this context, the Nepali embassy in the UAE and relevant authorities need to enhance emergency health facilities, regular medical check-ups, and safety awareness programs.
Such fatalities during overseas employment have significant impacts on families and society. Neglecting worker safety affects not only individuals but also the national economy. Therefore, policies and programs to ensure the protection, health, and safety of workers going abroad need to be strengthened.
Overall, these recent figures emphasize the urgent need to address the health and safety of Nepali workers abroad. Proper measures must be taken to improve their living and working conditions in the UAE.
