Kathmandu, Sept 21: Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat lashed out at party heavyweights Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakas Sharma, unleashing a storm at a press conference. His fury comes as calls for leadership change and a special general convention gain momentum.

“Our party president has fought a long battle for democracy. He faced a tragic attack. It’s painful that some of our own comrades couldn’t show sensitivity even while his recovery is incomplete,” Mahat said. “We are deeply concerned about debates that started before the wounds even healed. Now is the time to unite. Can’t we fix the shortcomings together? Pouring salt on a fresh wound is just wrong.”

Mahat also pointed fingers at those now protesting, noting they were close to the president just days before September 23.

“Up until four days before the 23rd, the president was perfectly fine, even in their eyes. We even thought of keeping our distance. The same comrades now questioning and calling for leadership change were the closest to him,” he said. “Look closely at their behavior—they were right there. We had pointed out certain things weren’t right. But does it mean that the sky should fall just because a guardian suffered a brutal attack and hasn’t even healed? The party has a central committee, structures in place. How did it happen? Why did it happen? We will evaluate that, but must we rush into it?”
