Kathmandu, Sept 20: Nepali Congress General Secretaries Bishwa Prakash Sharma and Gagan Thapa have called for urgent steps to restructure the party, presenting two possible paths to overhaul leadership and restore public trust.

Speaking at Friday’s NC Executive Committee meeting, they urged the party to confront its failures, commit to honest self-review, and prepare for leadership renewal through either a regular or a special convention.

Sharma and Thapa said the September 8 and 9 youth-led protests had made clear that the party must take responsibility for building a governance-driven, corruption-free state. They pushed for an investigation into the damage caused during the protests, punishment for those involved in misconduct, and speedy reconstruction of affected public property.

They reminded party members that Nepali Congress has historically stood for nonviolence, civil liberties, and the rule of law, even in times of crisis, and must continue to defend these values.

Their first proposal is to hold the regular convention by mid-December 2025, as required by the statute, without extending the current committee’s tenure. They suggested keeping the existing membership intact, opening a one-month window for new membership applications, and organizing the convention with this updated list.

Their second option is to immediately call a special convention, arguing that the present political climate demands urgent change. They pointed out that the party statute allows either the Central Executive Committee itself or 40 percent of convention members, with a written request, to trigger such a convention within three months.

By presenting these options, Sharma and Thapa have put pressure on the party leadership to act, signaling that delay is no longer acceptable and that the NC must reform itself if it wants to stay relevant in a post-protest political environment.
