Beijing, Sept 1: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s decision to firmly raise Nepal’s objection over Lipulekh with Chinese President Xi Jinping has become a talking point internationally.
During their meeting on Saturday, held alongside the SCO Summit in Tianjin, Oli made Nepal’s position clear on the India-China deal to reopen border trade through Lipulekh.
Indian media gave significant coverage to Oli’s stand.
Earlier, many in Nepal, including Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, had questioned whether Oli would raise the issue with Xi. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed through an official statement that Oli indeed voiced Nepal’s objection, putting speculation to rest.
Some raised questions as to why China did not mention Nepal’s objection in its press release. Experts clarified that third-country concerns are rarely included in Chinese statements, but Nepal’s official record makes it a permanent part of the diplomatic file.
