Kathmandu, Aug 30: Agitating sugarcane farmers have decided to launch a highway-centred protest. Accusing the government of negligence, they warned of blocking national highways.
A joint meeting of the Sugarcane Producers Federation Nepal and associations from sugarcane-producing districts, held on Saturday, decided to obstruct highways starting from September 10.
The federation said in a statement that the government, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers would be responsible for any damage caused by such protests.
The federation demanded unconditional payment of pending subsidies to farmers, inclusion of farmers’ representatives in sugarcane price determination, and creation of conditions for farmers to return from the streets to their homes and fields.
