
Kathmandu, August 30: After talks with the government failed on Friday, August 29, the sugarcane farmers staging a demonstration at the Maitighar Mandala for the past six days are preparing to return home.
Sugarcane farmers came to Kathmandu to protest the government’s decision to remove the subsidy on sugarcane and seek full payment of last year’s supply. But the government said that its treasury was empty.
The government decided to pay 35 rupees out of 70 rupees per quintal as a subsidy to the sugarcane farmers.
The sugarcane farmers who arrived in Kathmandu from different sugarcane pocket districts have decided to return home empty-handed, considering the upcoming festivals; however, decided to launch a massive demonstration in the Tarai districts after the festivals are over. Farmers are against the decision to remove of subsidy on sugarcane for farmers.
