Beijing Aug 28: China is fast-tracking the opening of the world’s tallest bridge after completing its construction. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, located in Guizhou Province, has successfully undergone its final stress test.

Built 625 meters above the Bipan River, this bridge is the tallest in the world and spans the longest distance in a mountainous region. Nestled within Guizhou’s dramatic karst mountains, it is being hailed as an unprecedented engineering achievement.

According to China Daily, the bridge successfully passed rigorous load testing from August 21 to 25. During the test, 96 heavy trucks totaling 3,360 metric tons were positioned on the bridge to assess its load-bearing capacity.

Over 400 sensors monitored the slightest movements in the main span towers, cables, and suspenders, ensuring the structure’s safety. Engineers confirmed that the bridge meets all required safety standards.

Bridge Features

The bridge stretches a total of 2,900 meters, with a main span of 1,420 meters. Rising 625 meters above the canyon floor, it will set the record as the world’s tallest bridge and the longest in a mountainous region once it opens.

Wu Zhaoming, project manager at Guizhou Transportation Investment Group Company Limited, noted that construction faced multiple challenges, including temperature management during large-scale concrete pours, stabilizing the casts, and reducing the impact of strong winds. Despite these obstacles, the team completed the project ahead of schedule.

Set to open in September, the bridge is expected to significantly boost local tourism and development, cutting travel time between Liuzhi and Anlong from two hours to just two minutes. Eight of the world’s top ten tallest bridges are in Guizhou, highlighting China’s dominance in bridge engineering.
