Kathmandu, Aug 24: Dr. Govinda KC has opposed the government’s move to increase MBBS and BDS seats, accusing it of bowing down to private medical college operators. He demanded that the decision be immediately withdrawn.

The 21st meeting of the Medical Education Commission had decided to raise the MBBS ceiling from 100 to 130 seats, and BDS from 50 to 60. KC argued that this decision would directly harm the quality of health education and services.

He gave the government an additional week to address his demands, warning that he would begin a protest and hunger strike if ignored. “We are giving the Medical Education Commission one more week. If our demands are not addressed within this timeframe, we will be compelled to start a movement including a hunger strike,” he said.

KC also issued a statement accusing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former prime ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) of abusing power to protect medical education mafias. He said recent irresponsible decisions such as the increase in seats, along with flawed decisions by the commission, government, and courts, have pushed the Medical Education Act to the brink.
