At first glance, he seems like an ordinary person in casual attire—polite, soft-spoken, and a careful listener. Many might assume he is jobless, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Every minute matters to him. He interacts with individuals from various backgrounds, and despite his humble appearance, he is a proud Nepali known for his dignity and self-respect. A dedicated professional, he is a recognized film production designer, production head, and production manager, making significant strides in his career regardless of age—he is Yam Prasad Oli.
Yam Prasad Oli is the managing director of Mount Everest Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and a key member of the Nepal Film Technician Association and the Nepal Film Producers' Association. Born on February 23, 1987, in Jharkada, Dadheldhura, he is the youngest of five siblings in a middle-income family involved in agriculture and trading.
Despite the lack of a local school, Yam began his education at Shree Shankar Kedar Primary School, excelling academically and changing schools three times before completing his tenth grade without ever falling below first place. After finishing eighth grade, he moved to Budar bazaar for further education at Shree Rampur Secondary School, where he became known as a top student, excelling in sports and extracurricular activities. He completed his school leaving certificate in 2059 BS and later took basic computer classes while awaiting results. He completed his higher secondary education at Shree Mahendra Higher Secondary School in 2061 BS.
Soon his life changed, and he started to search for jobs. He landed in Kathmandu as a visitor. However, his mind changed, he started to search for employment, because he knew, rather than borrowing money for expenses from his home, he could earn here and spend. By the year 2005, he began into professional life at ‘Classic Cine Universe Pvt. Ltd. in Bijulibazar of Kathmandu when he came to Kathmandu for a visit. It was his village relative's brother who had helped him get employment in the Classic. “All kinds of production jobs related to movie production, say, light and camera hiring, dubbing, recording, calling, mixing (Post Production), etc., were done in the Classic,” Yam tells of his beginning days. “After working there for some months, as Marketing Manager, I started working from inside the office as an accountant, Office Manager, and much more responsible positions,” says Oli. By that time, he was also taking degree-level classes from Kathmandu Education Campus in Putalisadak. He never discontinued his education. Even in his regular holidays, Yam started to work outside to make extra income. He was working in music videos, tele-serials, and advertisements. “A senior Production Designer, Prakash Mahara, has influenced me hugely in my work. With his guidance and support, I worked along. My beginning was from music videos, tele-serials, and advertisements.” Yam says.
Time after time, Yam grew accustomed to his profession and began to genuinely enjoy it. Gathering experience in this field, he established his own production company, Mount Everest Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., in 2068 BS. By this point, he had produced dozens of music videos, telefilms, documentaries, and movies through his company. Notable music videos such as "Chanchaley Nani Chulbuley Baani," "Swartha Timro," "Jhimjhim Parelima," "Nai Malai Thaha Chhaina," alongside documentaries and tele-serials like "Saino Kasto Kasto," "Eklabya," and "Mero Katha," highlight his work as a production designer and production head, which has earned him popularity.
His contributions to production management and design in films have made a significant impact on the Nepali movie sector. Works like "Sukhani Shahadat," based on the movement of 2028 BS; "Relation," centered on Taekwondo; and "Rudaney," which portrays the struggles of Rupchandra Bista, a leader of the Thaha movement, are part of his repertoire. Additionally, his successful feature films include "School," "Producer," "Hostel," "Aavash," "Hostel Returns," "Bijuli Machine," "Johney Gentleman," "Purano Bullet," "Sano Mann," "Hostel-3," "Magne Raja," and "Chameliko Poi."
Yam has also worked as a production designer in Hindi movies like "Yara," "Anyaya," and "Diwana 2," as well as in English productions such as "Nirahuwa Chaley London," "Foreign Bodies," and the tele-serial "Our Girl." Furthermore, he has contributed to over 50 advertisements. His documentary projects include a finalized work titled "Health & Safety," while another, "Yogamaya," is near completion. Historically significant, the documentary "Dharahara" and the TV commercial "Hero Bike Nepal TVC" are also now complete.
Yam’s dedicated, precision-oriented work as a film production designer has garnered him multiple awards, recognition, and honors. In conclusion, his popularity continues to rise.
