Kathmandu, Aug 19: Nepal has eliminated rubella, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday. The verification was endorsed by the Regional Commission for Measles and Rubella elimination in South-East Asia.
Rubella, which poses serious risks to pregnant women, is preventable through vaccines. Nepal introduced the rubella vaccine in 2012 and has since achieved over 95 percent coverage.
Nepal is now the sixth country in the region to be certified rubella-free. WHO officials credited the government, health workers, and communities for the achievement and pledged continued support to sustain it.
