New Delhi, Aug 15: India marked its 79th Independence Day today. As in previous years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort in the capital, Delhi. This was his 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the historic fort’s ramparts.

In his 105-minute long speech, longest ever by any Indian prime minister during the Independence Day address, Modi stressed that India must have its own jet engines for its Made-in-India fighter aircraft. He said dependence on others undermines the very idea of independence. “From the Red Fort, I appeal to young scientists, talented youth, engineers, professionals, and all government departments that we must have our own jet engines for our Made-in-India fighter planes,” Modi said.

“A developed India rests on the foundation of a self-reliant India. If someone depends too much on others, the question of independence itself begins to fade. Self-reliance is not limited to imports, exports, or currency. Its meaning is much broader. It is directly connected to our strength.”

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to salute the brave soldiers of Operation Sindoor. He said they had punished enemies in ways beyond their imagination. Modi made it clear that India will no longer tolerate nuclear threats or blackmail. “India has decided that we will not endure nuclear threats. We will not tolerate blackmail,” he said.

“Our brave soldiers have given punishments to the enemies beyond their imagination. The whole of India is filled with anger. The entire world is shocked by such massacres. Operation Sindoor is the expression of that anger. India has decided that blood and water will not flow together. The waters of India’s rivers, which irrigate enemy lands, will now be claimed by India.”

Before addressing the nation, Modi visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
