Kathmandu, Aug 12: The Indian government has agreed to purchase an additional 200 megawatts of electricity from Nepal. The Nepal Electricity Authority said India has permitted the import of electricity generated from five hydropower projects.

Earlier, India had allowed the import of 810.9 megawatts of electricity from Nepal. With this new approval, the total export capacity from Nepal to India has now reached 1,011 megawatts.

Nepal is also exporting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh, bringing Nepal’s total export approval to 1,050.9 megawatts.

The authority added that the permission for exporting this additional 200 megawatts is valid until October 31.

The electricity will come from the following projects: Likhu-2, Likhu Khola A, Lower Solu, Thulo Khola, Super Kabeli Khola A, and Super Kabeli Khola.

In the last fiscal year 2078/79 (2021/22), Nepal earned 1.747 billion NPR by exporting electricity to India.

With the new approval from the Indian government, the authority expects electricity exports to double in the current fiscal year.
