Kailali, Aug 9: The federal and Sudurpaschim provincial governments have taken serious note of the tense situation at Kailali District Prison following a violent midnight clash on Friday that left one inmate dead.
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah held an emergency meeting on Saturday to review the incident and plan the next steps. Discussions focused on the dire conditions inside the prison, major lapses in security, and broader law-and-order and disaster management issues in the province.
According to officials, the attack was carried out by a group led by Nabin Rawal, known as “Nandu Sarkar,” who broke into a block where rival inmates were sleeping and assaulted them with khukuris, rods, and knives. The assault killed 40-year-old inmate Bharat Chaudhary and injured about 49 others.
The violence is linked to a long-standing gang rivalry between Rawal’s group and that of Jayendra Shah, which is also connected to the 2021 murder of Bhupendra Baduwal.
The incident has exposed serious negligence by prison authorities and local security forces. Just a day earlier, on Thursday, a clash between the same two groups left five inmates injured, yet no preventive measures were taken despite warnings of potential violence.
After Friday night’s bloodshed, inmates have seized control of the prison, locking the gates from the inside and blocking security personnel from entering.
