
Kathmandu, August 4: Sugarcane farmers have demanded the release of the government grant amount immediately. They have warned that they will protest if the grant amount promised by the government in the last fiscal year is not disbursed by the month of Saun.
The Sugarcane Producers Association of Rautahat submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the District Administration Office on Sunday, demanding immediate payment of the amount to the sugarcane farmers. A team of officials from the association and leading farmers handed over the memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Chief District Officer, warning that they would start a movement centered in Kathmandu from August 24.
Farmers across the country have stated that they are still owed 1 billion 60 crore rupees in grants for the fiscal year 2081/82. Farmers complain that they have yet to receive approximately 1 billion 70 crore rupees at the rate of 70 rupees per quintal set by the government in the past year.
The government has decided not to provide the subsidy amount that it has been giving to sugarcane farmers starting from the current fiscal year. The amount that was promised in the last fiscal year has also not been disbursed. Farmers are outraged, stating that the government has disappointed the sugarcane farmers.
In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister through the District Administration Office, sugarcane farmers have stated that they will protest by burning tires at the sugar mill gate on Saun 20 and will stage a sit-in at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu starting from August 24.
