Kathmandu, Aug 1: Nepal and China today (Friday) officially celebrate the start of the 70th year of their diplomatic relationship, with commemorative events taking place in both Kathmandu and Beijing.

While historical ties trace back to the marriage of Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo and Nepali Princess Bhrikuti, formal diplomatic relations were established on August 1, 1955—six years after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

Rajeshwor Acharya, a former Nepali ambassador to China, emphasized that the bilateral relationship is built on the foundations of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, non-interference, and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said both nations have consistently prioritized and nurtured these ties, with top-level leadership on both sides actively working to deepen cooperation.

Acharya highlighted China’s influential role in international affairs as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, noting its commitment to a rules-based international order, global peace, and inclusive development through partnership.

He also urged Nepal to strategically leverage China’s growing global influence to support its own development goals.

In celebration of the occasion, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is expected to attend a reception this evening hosted by Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, according to the PM’s private secretariat.
