A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck about 78 miles (126km) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, at a depth of 18 kilometres on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
BBC reported that the tremor generated a tsunami of 3-4 metres in Kamchatka, according to Sergei Lebedev, the regional minister for emergency situations.
Tsunami warnings were issued in several countries located on the coast of Pacific from the USA to Japan, with authorities evacuating many places both in Japan and Hawai in the USA.
It is said to be the strongest tremor on the planet since 2011, when a 9.0 megaquake struck northeastern Japan — and is the sixth-strongest quake ever recorded.
