Kathmandu, July 29: The festival of Nag Panchami is being celebrated today by worshipping the Nagas (snakes) as per tradition. This festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of Shravan Shukla.

It is a popular belief that worshipping the Nags and sticking the picture of the snacks on the main door of the house will not hurt the creatures like poisonous snakes in the house throughout the year. It is also believed that the fear of fire, clouds and lightning can also be avoided.

Although there are twelve names of Nagas, there is a tradition since Vedic times to worship the eight Nagas of the eight families. Ananta, Vasuki, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshaka, Kulir, Karka and Shankha are the eight Nagas worshipped by the Brahmin priests on this day and affixed on the door of the house.

Along with Nag Panchami, a series of festivals will start, and they will end with the Chhat festival.
