Sindhuli, July 28: Sixteen members of a Hayu family from Golanjor Rural Municipality-6 in Sindhuli have been missing since Thursday, triggering concern among local officials and residents.

The group, including Urmila Hayu, reportedly disappeared a day after collecting three months’ worth of social security allowances—totaling Rs191,520—from Himalayan Bank’s Khurkot branch.
According to Ward Chair Rabin Kumar Shrestha, the family of 18 had two members away—one in Kathmandu and another abroad—when the rest vanished from their remote home in Bhandas Bippar Kateri, near Chetpa, shortly after hosting a pig feast on Thursday.
Authorities found the house abandoned on Monday. The kitchen showed signs of a recent fire, utensils were strewn about, and five goats were left starving in a pen. A dog was seen whimpering nearby. Neighbours, just a 15-minute walk away, reported no activity since Friday.
Police suspect the family may have travelled to Manthali, Ramechhap, based on a mobile signal ping. However, all phones are now switched off, and no confirmed sightings have been reported since.
The Hayu are a highly endangered indigenous group in Nepal, with just 3,069 members nationwide, mostly in Sindhuli and Ramechhap, according to the 2021 census.
