Few regions in the world have witnessed as much foreign interference — or resisted it so stubbornly — as Afghanistan. In Afghanistan: Graveyard of Empires, authored by Rabi Raj Thapa unpacks the long, tumultuous history of this landlocked nation, exploring why it has earned such a haunting title.

From the British invasions in the 19th century to the Soviet occupation and the recent American withdrawal, the book traces a clear pattern of global powers entering with confidence and leaving in frustration. The author, former Additional Inspector General (AIG) of the Armed Police Force and also a former senior officer of the Nepal Police, having a security background, combines military history with political insights, helping readers to understand what happened and why.

While the book leans heavily on strategic and geopolitical analysis, it remains readable and relevant. It reminds us that Afghanistan is not just a battlefield, but a nation shaped by ancient traditions, tribal loyalties, and a fierce spirit of independence.

The book critically analyzes Nepal’s political trajectory, highlighting the consequences of misguided policies and power-centric leadership. It emphasizes that Nepal’s development is hindered by internal political conflicts and lack of strategic vision. It urges Nepali leaders to adopt a peaceful, stable, and globally cooperative approach, especially in dealing with international agreements like MCC, BRI, and State Strategic Partnership (SSP). Foreign policy, if not handled properly, could undermine Nepal’s national sovereignty and long-term interests.  Today, the Eastern and African countries freed themselves from colonization, Nepal also needs to walk on the path of peace, stability, and economic prosperity. This requires long-term, strategic planning and correct political understanding. No nation can reach sustainable development through mere slogans or political arrogance. True cooperation with the global community and international development partners is essential. It’s time to realize that suppression and coercion do not bring lasting results, and peace must be pursued genuinely.

This book is written with the intention of providing educational, practical knowledge and information to any country, individual, or institution that lacks historical and contextual awareness. Today, even in Nepal, government policies, plans, and programs have become subjects of political debate. This book will help Nepal understand its current situation, considering historical events and facts, and aid in thinking and acting wisely.

It is hoped that such understanding can help the country avoid irreversible damage and disasters in the future. Today, as the nation runs based on foreign aid and remittance income, foreign loans and grants have brought about external pressure and interference. If Nepal cannot control this, its independence and sovereignty may be at risk.

If the current trend of manipulating and controlling the country and government through external influences continues, the very existence of Nepal may be threatened in the future. Tomorrow’s generation and Nepal’s rulers could suffer the same fate as countries like Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lebanon, Syria, Libya, and Afghanistan — nations that have endured immense hardship and turmoil due to foreign meddling.

This book has been prepared with references and examples from such countries to highlight the consequences and caution Nepal against similar dangers. Though occasionally dense in detail, Afghanistan: Graveyard of Empires is a timely and thought-provoking read, especially in an era where the consequences of foreign intervention are still unfolding.
