Kathmandu, June 3: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed his willingness to hand over the premiership to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in line with the power-sharing agreement between the two parties. Speaking at an interaction with cadres close to the Non-Resident Nepali Forum on Wednesday night at the Nepali Ambassador’s residence in Madrid, PM Oli made the announcement.
Around 40 participants from Spain and Portugal attended the meeting.
According to Muktabahadur Gurung, president of the Europe chapter of the Non-Resident Nepali Forum, Oli stated, “The cooperation between the two major parties aims to ensure political stability in the country. This government has been formed for that very purpose. In the upcoming elections, UML and Congress will be competitors. So, today’s cooperation should be viewed in the spirit of the joint democratic movement of 1990 (2046 BS).”
Oli emphasized that the current coalition government was formed based on a clear agreement and dismissed any confusion over power transfer. “Though the plan is to lead the government for two years, it’s not mandatory to wait until the term ends. I am willing to hand over the post to Deubaji even 10–15 days earlier,” Gurung quoted Oli as saying.
Extending best wishes to Nepalis who have permanently settled in Europe, PM Oli also encouraged those staying temporarily and facing hardships to consider returning to Nepal and exploring opportunities in modern agriculture. “There is high potential in cultivating fallow lands. Many friends have returned and are engaging in this sector,” Gurung further quoted Oli.
According to participants, PM Oli did not comment on former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s recent political reactivation. However, one attendee said Oli hinted that the UML-Congress alliance could face subtle internal weakening in the future, adding, “Such a situation might arise within the party as well, but for now, things are in order.”
Also present at the gathering were Hem Sherpa, Secretary of the NRN International Committee; Europe President Gurung; Spain chapter President Kedarnath Dhungana; and Portugal chapter President Deepak Khatri.
