Kathmandu, June 26: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is heading to Spain this Saturday to lead Nepal’s delegation at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, which will take place from June 30 to July 3.
According to Nepali Ambassador to Spain Shanil Nepal, preparations for the visit are complete, and the local Nepali community is eagerly awaiting the Prime Minister's arrival. During the visit, PM Oli is expected to meet his Spanish counterpart for bilateral talks, during which the two nations will sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation.
In addition to attending the conference, the Prime Minister will also engage with Spanish entrepreneurs and the Nepali diaspora. Several other diplomatic meetings are also lined up during his stay.
Nepal and Spain established diplomatic ties on May 13, 1968. Nepal opened its embassy in Madrid in 2018, though Spain continues to manage its Nepal affairs through its embassy in New Delhi. Today, around 20,000 Nepalis live in Spain, mainly working in agriculture, tourism, hospitality, and construction.
Over the years, high-level visits have reinforced bilateral relations. King Birendra visited Spain in 1983, followed by King Carlos’s 1987 trip to Nepal. More recently, leaders like Pushpa Kamal Dahal (2016), Gokul Baskota (2019), and President Bidya Devi Bhandari (2021) have engaged in Spain-based international events and diplomatic exchanges. Notably, Nepal and Spain agreed to collaborate on climate change and tourism during Bhandari’s visit.
Spain remains one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and is increasingly drawing Nepali migrant workers. With a rich football culture and Spanish being the world’s fourth most spoken language, the country is both culturally influential and economically significant on the global stage.
