Kathmandu, May 26: The National Human Rights Commission has stated that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's statement is worrisome.
On Monday, the commission's joint secretary and spokesperson, Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, issued a statement expressing concern over the PM’s remarks about the pro-monarchy movement.
The Commission stated, "The Constitution and laws of Nepal do not prohibit the peaceful expression of thoughts and opinions. In this context, the expression from the honorable Prime Minister targeting the thoughts, expressions, and demonstrations of others is concerning."
The Commission stated that while any individual, group, or party has the freedom of thought and expression, inciting confrontation against others through provocative expressions is contrary to the fundamental values of human rights.
While the responsibility of maintaining the country's peace, security, and order lies with the government's security agencies, the commission believes that in a democratic country, allowing any particular party to occupy any area is contrary to the rule of law and amounts to endorsing prohibition.
The commission has urged all parties involved to exercise restraint when expressing themselves, refrain from making negative comments targeting individuals, groups, or parties, strengthen the peace and security of areas including the capital, and ensure that their protests and demonstrations remain peaceful.
PM Oli remarked on Sunday during an event that Kathmandu should be under the control of the UML from 11 AM to 2 PM on May 29.
Referring to the upcoming people's movement in Kathmandu by the United People's Movement Committee supporting the monarchy starting from May 29, he said this.
The National Human Rights Commission has expressed serious concern regarding the directive statement made to UML activists to be prepared for that.
