Kathmandu, May 22: Nepali Congress spokesperson and former minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat has stated that the 15th convention of the Nepali Congress will not take place within the month of Mangsir, 2082 (December 15, 2025).

Addressing an interaction program organized by the Nepali Congress Tanahun in Damauli on Thursday, he mentioned that the convention is likely to be postponed by six months to a year. He attributed the delay to the late renewal of memberships and the distribution of new memberships.

According to the party statute, there is a provision to extend the term, so the time for the general convention will be extended by one year, he said.

Mahat mentioned, "In past conventions, the tenure was extended, and this time too, due to lack of preparation, it is necessary to be extended."

Dr Mahat stated that the agreement with UML was made due to the proportional political system, which necessitates reaching an agreement with other parties in the absence of a majority for any single party. He mentioned that the main need now is to strengthen the party by addressing its internal weaknesses.

The spokesperson believed that the Congress party could only compete with other parties if it became strong. He mentioned that even though there were differences in principles between Congress and UML, cooperation was established because diplomacy takes precedence over principles. He stated that it was appropriate to cooperate with UML to fulfill the people's desires and come to power.

In the program, Nepali Congress central member Dhruba Wagle, invited central member Pushpraj Parajuli, former Nepali Congress chairman Raghunath Poudel, vice-chairpersons Rajendra Krishna Shrestha, Devkumar Shrestha, secretaries Sahadev Adhikari, Laxmibhakta Khanal, and Nepal Women's Association Tanahun chairperson Pabitra Poudel, among others, emphasized the need to focus on party strengthening by setting aside personal interests and avoiding factionalism.
